(Above: The largest herb I transplanted was a tree-like rosemary. I put it in a container bearing two other slightly-withered rosemary plants. With my regularly tending to them, perhaps they will be restored to health.)
Weather: Today began in the low 50s and proceeded to warm into the low 80s. Mostly sunny.
Early morning in Taxco & Breakfast at Casa Spratling:
The Taxco Zócalo, pre-dawn. [4/7/2022] I took this picture on the way to Market Tetitlán where, due to Scaffecito being closed on Thursdays, I bought my breakfast fruit. Casa Spratling a few minutes after by return from the Mercado Tetitlán. [4/7/2022]. This is the fruit I acquired at the Mercado for 53 pesos (bell pepper that I also got is not included in this image). Breakfast: A bowl of fruit (Grapes, mango, banana, & peach) accompanied by a glass of Taxco Agua Mineral and some reading about William Spratling.
Late morning adventure of playing the piano in Museo de Arte Virreinal de Taxco. And getting a cup of coffee:
Due to my not getting the usual cup of coffee at Scaffecito this morning (closed on Thursdays), I stopped by Café Punta Del Cielo – a chain coffee establishment – on the way back from playing the piano. It reminded me of a Starbucks. I would probably rate it 5/10 due to the more-or-less commercial atmosphere, but the ‘Café Americano’ was still passable.
Acquiring ingredients for lunch & lunch itself at Casa Spratling:
View of the Zócalo & Casa Spratling from under a tree located within viewing distance of the mini-Guadalupe-mercado. Freshly made corn tortillas (6 pesos worth) acquired from the Guadalupe Market and scrambled-vegetable-and-cheese-eggs (5 eggs, 1 jalapeño, 1 tomato, 1/4 onion, crumbly market cheese, and spices). Salsa Robertina acquired from the Guadalupe Mercado for 5 pesos. Salad: 1 head of Romaine lettuce, 4 little tomatoes, and 1/4 onion dressed in a Balsamic vinaigrette. The full spread accompanied by a glass of Taxco Agua Mineral. An assembled egg taco. As was to be expected, it was even better than the egg tacos I usually make at home. I attribute this primarily to the fresh corn tortilla.
Gardening at Casa Spratling:
This afternoon, I transplanted the four herbs that Violante (the Airbnb hostess) showed me the other day. It was a relaxing late-day task and relieving to work with soil after living in-city for 10 days. I am uncertain what type of plant this is, but it smells somewhat minty. A medium-sized rosemary plant akin to that which I have back at Jacobhouse. The largest herb I transplanted was a tree-like rosemary. I put it in a container bearing two other slightly-withered rosemary plants. With my regularly tending to them, perhaps they will be restored to health. After transplanting, I prepared an ‘uninhabited’ container by removing excess vegetation and leaves and pouring in some water. I next scattered some arugula seeds (which I brought with me) into the exposed dark soil. If all goes well, they may sprout and grow a few inches before I depart Casa Spratling for Florida. Dinner at Antologia Grill – Delicious food, tremendous presentation – 10/10
Gratis starter of toasted garlic bread accompanied by two types of chimichurri – a spicy red and a lightly garlicy green. The smell and flavor of the bread was delicious. As for the wine I ordered, it was a Malbec (possibly Chilean). La ensalada uva. Three leaves of romaine, 3/4 cup of cantaloupe, 1/2 cup of carrot, 1/3 cup of grape, 1/3 cup of apple, a few small sticks of celery, and a decorative cantaloupe rose at the center. Served with a sweet blue-cheese dressing. The presentation of this dish was fantastic, but next time I would go with a more vegetable-based salad. This one was akin to a dessert! Guacamole topped with vegetables equal in color to those found on the Mexican flag: tomato, jalapeño, and onion. Excellent texture and just the right amount of salt. Next time, I may ask for a wee bit more lime. Shrimp Linguine served in a creamy tomato sauce and topped with a ‘tomato peel rose’ and two leaves of fresh parsley. This was probably the most beautifully presented dish of food I’ve eaten in Taxco (or possibly ever).
Final Note: It was a delightful day of writing, food, music, and gardning. That sounds about right.
Looks like it was a day to inspire all of the senses, thanks again for sharing.
