The first light fixture installed at Jacob's container home.

Wiring Jacobhouse, Day 10. :-)

3/31/19:

Building Summary: Today I wired in the porch light. This consisted of installing the mounting bracket, joining the wires I threaded into the electrical box with those provided by the fixture*, and then seating the light on the aforementioned bracket. To finish up, I caulked around the edge of the fixture to prevent the entry of water and insects.

Commentary: It was a shorter morning at Jacobhouse today on account of some additional business at the farm. That, however, did not stop me from wiring in the first light fixture at my soon-to-be abode. As can be seen above, there’s no light bulb or electricity yet, but the fixture itself appears quite at home in its new location.

The guests left behind quite a mess.

A couple interesting occurrences took place while working on the light. The first happened when I was shoving the Romex wire through the back of the box, for it was there that I discovered what the wrens have been doing in Jacobhouse for the past couple days. Yep. Just making a big ole mess. It’s actually impressive how much debris those little birds can move in over the span of a day or two.

The second highlight of interest concerns the ‘face’ on front of Jacobhouse. It may have been noted in prior pictures as a little white square with brown eyes and a little ‘smiley’ expression. Well, I had to remove it today, because that’s where the light fixture needed to go. The first cut may have been a tad melancholic, but then I remembered; I painted on that little face back before the front exterior of the container had been sealed – before the trim had been cut and put in place, before the sail-shade idea was conceived of, and before a single step had even been taken toward working on the inside.

It’s good to glance back sometimes and see how far it has all come.

Smiley face remains unperturbed by his displacement.

Final Note: Tomorrow looks like it will be a big supply day for Jacobhouse. Madre and I will be going into down to fetch a whole bunch of Home Depot supplies (and perhaps bring home some delectable sushi lunch while we’re at it), and the RTA cabinets are scheduled to be delivered later on in the day.

Additional Note: The FedEx business grant contest is still going for one more day! If you have the time, vote for Master Blend here. Thanks!

*Used wire-nuts to do this, and then I wrapped the joins with black electrical tape.
