(Above: The tentative hookups for dryer/steam hoses atop the container home’s shower stall.)
Building Summary: Today I began the process of applying galvalume above and beside Jacobhouse’s shower stall (a task including much marking/measuring/cutting/fastening and of which there is more mentioned in the commentary). Then, I cleaned up the place before heading to oldhouse where I cooked up a lunch of delicious Portobello Bun Burgers.
Commentary: I like to imagine a reader visiting Find Walden for the first time and seeing the image and title of this post. They would have no idea what to think—just as I would have had no idea what to think if I saw this post before this past morning’s proceedings. Fortunately, I was there whilst the above image was taken, just as I too was one of the conspirators to conceive of this madness.
To elucidate, the shower stall has two vents in the top for…. Hm. Now that I think upon it, I’m not entirely certain why they are present. Is it to prevent heat build up? Moisture retention? IS it there, perhaps, to prevent asphyxiation via steam? Is that even possible? As I write these queries, I am beginning to wonder if any of this morning’s efforts were worth their while*. They were, I think, if only to create the mysterious image above and that I will now proceed to explain:
The intent was (and still may be) to rig up a system of dryer hoses, connecting them to the metal ‘stub ups’**, and then extending them to the central tee where they will merge. Meanwhile, connected to the tee’s third opening, will be an aluminum-wrought ventilation hole***. Thus, while taking a shower, the steam will rise up into the dryer lines and out through the air vent where it will promptly be sucked away by the bathroom’s exhaust fan.
But still, the question remains with me. Why?
Final Note: Tomorrow I intend to finish fastening Galvalume around the top of the shower, and then I will measure/mark/cut a piece of metal for the north side where the 2×6 spacer/access board does not quite meet the container’s wall.
*I wonder why I can’t just lay something over the vent openings and simply allow the exhaust fan to remove moisture after I’m out of the shower (when the doors are open).
** Pieces of air-duct couplings that Padre fashioned into metallic ‘flowers’ via snipping at intervals along the rim of one side and then pulling the ‘petals’ back. Onto these petals, I applied dollops of Locktite adhesive so I could glue them firmly over the shower vessel’s vents. The unclipped side of the couplings will now act as adapters onto which the dryer hose will fit.
***Something that will prevent moisture from accumulating behind the intended galvalume curve that I’ll be fastening above the shower.
