Final Note: Draft of the Epigraph from Lani’s thirteenth chapter in Book 2 – To Lands Beyond.

“Alright,” the balding, heavyset man sat himself down at the table’s opposite side and gazed forth with eyes that twinkled with half merriment and half mischief in the candlelight, “The first key quality to a fine ‘recruiter’ is the ability see potential. We’re not talking fantastical potential, like converting some sour old man into a kindly one or a portly wench into something you’d find in a nobleman’s flipbook. Leave those poor creatures to the rookies.

“In our case, we seek real potential, and in my experience, it’s rare to find older individuals like yourself who bear such an attribute.”

“Sank you, I suppose?” the Trinacrian thanked, to which the Slavemaster’s naturally pouted lips curled into a grin;

“Very welcome, friend. Now, in the case of finding real potential in a reliable manner, there’s only one group of individuals that I’ve found to possess the trait nearly every time: little lads and lassies of four to six roundings. Right at that age where they’ve just taken up the crown of consciousness but before they’ve been burdened with fear of the fetters—really, before they’ve been burdened with fear at all.”

“Ah, so sat’s why,” Herr muttered to himself, proceeding to ask, “And once we have zese little ones? What zen?”

The man across the table tapped that sturdy oaken surface for the ensuing points, using each meaty finger and then a fat thumb; “One – limit praise. Two – limit punishment. Three – grant encouragement. Four – grant challenges that are intrinsically rewarding. Five – teach them that the only thing they are entitled to is experience… experience and the ability to make the best of that experience.

“Ah, and six,” the Slave-master curled those fingers into a fist and struck the table. It was not a vicious strike, but it was enough to make the candle sputter, “Six, above all else. We do not call them slaves. The buyers can name them and name us whatever they wish, but we name our recruits ‘humans’. We name them humans from the very start that they may always remember it.

“Follow these six steps, and watch those little ones grow into fine men and women who desire to ‘do’ and ‘create’ and ‘produce’ regardless of circumstance or meaningless societal labels. Watch them grow into humans who, through our guidance, are a mite freer than their so-called masters.”

  1. I actually have two comments, the first is that even after having a great dinner those short ribs look tremendous, and I was still take a bite or maybe two. The second, regards the closing thoughts that are not fit to share here so I will send them to you via text. Say suffice to say excellent.

  2. Quote from Tortuga 🐢 de la Sabiduría @ May 5, 2024 @ 8:58 PM

    “🐢… With slow steps and legs with a little poop I approach… I loved this week, and above all every drop of water that nourishes this blog, Leaving the life of young Walden as beautiful anecdotes, it is my favorite blog…I really liked the pipe, life on the farm is so nice and simple. My best parts were the pillow cow, and your first BBQ sauces, I’m glad my mom accompanied you, (thoughts Indescribable…), in a way it makes me proud to see those sugar-free sauces jiji.. I also really liked the cicada, that little one here sings or screams when the March and April rains are approaching and it looks like a bird. Although mom is not here, I will always be here. I give my paw of promise…. 🐢 out…”
