(Above: Cows clambering atop the straw bedding dumped in their field this afternoon, transforming the piles into cowntains.)
Active Summary: This morning began with a little bit of creative writing and was followed by the customary beef pasture check. I next worked for a while on the grain room, organizing nuts, bolts, wrenches, hammers, and unidentifiable miscellanea. The sorting eventually grew wearisome so I proceeded to venture to Oldhouse and make some masa dough (tortilla dough) for a taco lunch. This cook-break was ensued by more tool room shenanigans, putting away the table on which I painted Jacobhouse’s floor moldings, and a Master Blend Beef sale.
(6:44 PM Update:) This afternoon I helped with a number of cattle related activities – feeding, vaccination, and cleaning troughs – and I also aided in the delivery of some straw bedding to the Holstein heifer field. To finish off the evening activities, I repaired a small piece of fence and fastened a coat-hanging hook at the front of Jacobhouse.
TIL: Today, while tending to the tasks above, I found a strange tool I had never seen before. The name did not remain a mystery for long, however, as it had a label etched right into the metal: a fingertip socket. It was akin to a socket-ratchet without a handle, and I suppose it would be very useful in tight spaces. Alas, the one I found had corroded*, but even if it does not work, it still taught me something.
Commentary: It is exactly two days until the freekend begins and precisely one month until my brother and I set out on our expedition to Europe. Needless to say, there is much anticipation to be had at the moment… perhaps almost as much as this bovine anticipates her morning treat:
Final Note: Tomorrow I will be performing the weekly cleaning for Jacobhouse, going to the farm market, tending to the garden, and if there is time, returning to the tool room for more tidying.
* I may end up soaking the little mechanism in some diesel fuel to see if that loosens it up.
