(Above: Despite the morning’s early tribulations, Jacobhouse’s sliding glass doors are now soundly in place.)
Building Summary: Today I started off by leveling the top portion of the sliding glass door frame and fastening it in place. This was followed by securing the sides and the base. Padre and I next brought out the sliding glass doors and made to insert them into their tracks, only to find that I had installed the frame upside down (more in commentary). I commenced to remove, flip, and peel excess caulking off the sides of the frame*. Padre and I then reinstalled the doorway in a correct fashion, and after I had leveled, shimmed, and fastened it in place, he and Wag helped me install the glass and screen doors.
Commentary: The highlight for today is obvious. I installed a sliding glass door frame upside down. It was fastened in with about 15 – 20 screws, fully shimmed, leveled, and caulked… but it was upside down. I was peeved, to say the least, and I think Padre felt understandably sorry for me which only increased my ‘peevedness’ which in turn may have led to my acting like (<==) that very same word without the ‘v’ or the ‘d’. Well… not quite that spelling, but those who are knowledgeable of homophones know what I’m driving at.
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being least difficult and 10 being incredibly difficult, my original thoughts on removing and reinserting that frame ranked at about a 7 or 8. It turned out to be a 3. I simply removed the screws, tipped the frame back (during which the silicone caulk peeled cleanly away), lowered it to the ground outside, and turned it right side up. After that, I only needed to repeat what Padre and I performed yesterday; that is, caulking, shimming, and fastening it in place. It took much less time this go around, and afterward, Padre and Wag were kind enough to help me lift the sliding glass doors up and into the correctly installed frame. They went in easily after a couple of tries, and I commenced to straighten and square them up with one another**.
It was a successful morning made all the moreso via the educational experience.
Final Note: Tomorrow shall be a morning filled with measurements. I need to find out how much roofing steel I will need for the bathroom walls and for the inside of Wall #6. I’ll also need to know how many pieces of PVC trim to purchase for around the new wall’s exterior and how much sheet metal I’ll need to extend between the sliding glass door frame and the container’s sides. I should still have time after that to gather measurements for the kitchen counter and flooring.
*Left some of the caulking on the top because there was a fairly decent sized gap to accommodate it.
**And now they slide like butter over a toasty skillet.
I’m guessing not too many people have Holstein, Wagyu and Angus calves wandering out their yard as viewed through a momentarily upside-down doorway… guessing a one in an eight billion chance congrats, I think Thoreau would appreciate that
