The east side kitchen sink support.

The Kitchen Counter, Part 1.

8/17/19

(Above: The eastern support I added to the kitchen sink’s base cabinet.)

Building Summary: Today I began by planning (with Padre’s help) for the kitchen counter’s supporting frame, and I continued this pondering / drawing until 9 AM when I went down to the Harbison Farmers Market.

After lunch, I returned to Jacobhouse and began to implement the ‘firmer’ plans. This included fortifying the kitchen sink base cabinet with 2x4s (little arches to both sides of where the sink will be), stubbing up a 2×4 from the end of the kitchen’s raised portion and attaching a 2×8 both to the aforementioned 2×4 stub-up and to the 2×6 frame that surrounds the panel box. The 2×8 will support the west end of the kitchen counter while the 2×4 will help with that support while simultaneously holding up the lower (removable) counter. The day at Jacobhouse ended as it began: with more planning in regard how to frame the base for that mini-counter.

TIL: Wear gloves when drilling in unfamiliar screws. Today, as I put in some thin, ultra-hardened ‘self-tappers’, I got a number of miniature splinters in my left thumb and forefinger (fragments that came off of the screws as I drilled them into 2x4s).

Commentary: It’s another late-night commentary this evening – a growing trend on account of the additional hours I’ve been working on Jacobhouse. I already wrote above about how today’s activities consisted of planning and beginning to build the kitchen counter’s frame, and I don’t really have anything else to say about the matter other than I’m quite interested (if not excited) to see how it all turns out.

The main highlight for this day is an interesting thought. I have, for as long as I can remember, enjoyed cooking. The interaction with ingredients, the mixing and melding of them into unique final products, and the sheer satisfaction of seeing others enjoy the diverse flavors and textures (and in my own case, the delayed gratification of experiencing the same). I’m not entirely certain where I was going with this topic, but I will say that the feeling I got whilst eating the impromptu scalloped potatoes and ciabatta-sourdough I made this evening is strikingly similar to the sentiment I encounter when walking into Jacobhouse.

Scalloped potatoes made by Jacob.
Bonus Image: Impromptu scalloped potatoes with fresh sourdough ciabatta toast. Ingredients – 1/2 large potato, 1/2 large jalapeno, 1/4 cup roasted peppers, 1/3 cup heavy cream, 1/3 cup mozzarella, 1 large clove garlic, salt, pepper, and a smidgen of cayenne.

Final Note: Tomorrow there will be more planning (and hopeful execution) for the lower counter’s frame. If the support is finished, I will be able to move onto forming the counters themselves.
