The kitchen in Jacob's Container home at late day.

Mulberry Morning (and kitchen plywood laid).

4/10/19

Building Summary: Today I started off by fastening down the primary piece of kitchen base with a combination of 3″ and 1 5/8” screws. This was followed by my measuring, cutting, notching, placing, and fastening the plywood sections for between the refrigerator and oven and for under the refrigerator itself.

As for additional activities, today I have been looking up lighting fixtures at Lowe’s because they are currently having an ‘up to 50% off’ sale. I intend to continue my search later this evening, because Madre and I are going into town for a grocery run tomorrow morning.

Commentary: With the kitchen base snug in place, I’m ready to face the bathroom space. Now that rhyming’s out ‘the way, here are highlights for t’day.

It was a peaceful morning at Jacobhouse. I arrived before the sun was cooking hot, and even when it was, I had a convenient bit of shadow to work under thanks to the shade-sail. As for the wren, it behaved itself today*, fluttering out through the utility hole when I opened the door, and then commencing to sing quite vocally.

The song of a Carolina wren is quite pretty when it’s actually singing and not ‘croaking’ in dismay. I would have thought the creature to make the latter noise when I disturbed it, but all the times it has flown out of Jacobhouse, it hasn’t complained in the slightest. It has only sang. Could it be gratitude? Or is the crafty little bird trying to lure me – a perceived predator – back outdoors and away from the nest. It’s an interesting bit of behaviour, either way.

To add to the highlights, I should mention that my family has been running low on fruit over the past couple days (hence the impending grocery run). So, this morning, I went about temporarily remedying the quandary. I spent twelve minutes picking mulberries, and in that time procured about a hundred of the things – all of them succulent, purple, and deliciously ripe. Even better, there are many many more on the way.

A mulberry tree found just south west of Jacob's container home.
A currently endless supply of mulberries. Even the cedar waxwing (birds) cannot keep up.

Final Note: If all goes well in town tomorrow, I will have procured lighting fixtures for Jacobhouse. Also, I intend to find something that I can either lay over or paint onto the kitchen’s raised section in readiness for the appliances..

*There was an episode yesterday where my ‘boarder’ pooped on the floor, but I blame that on the critter’s being frightened by the presence of two people in the same container.

  1. * From the wren’s perspective having two of something that easily 200 times bigger than me appear and plod about what I thought was my home might have the same effect.
