4/7/19:
Building Summary: Today I put down more plywood flooring in Jacobhouse. The process, like yesterday, consisted of measuring, cutting, and fastening the planks to sub-boards with deck screws. I did not have to move any of the original ‘floorboards’ today, but I did end up having to install a couple extra 2x4s with self-tapping screws so the edges of the plywood would have a solid attachment surface.
It should also be noted that for the last portion of the morning, Padre was cutting wood as I fastened it in – a system more than twice a quick as my solo pace.
Commentary: Slightly over half of Jacobhouse’s walking area is now surfaced with ¾” plywood, and to add to this, Padre helped me cover the angle section that resides between the kitchen and bathroom. It was a progressive day, but in regard to highlights, it was also somewhat semblant to yesterday: more kneeling and standing exercise, and more strolling about over an even greater wood-clad surface.
That is not to say an unusual highlight occurred away from Jacobhouse. Indeed, as Padre came back from checking fences around the woods behind our house, he found an odd spike-leafed plant growing at the end of our driveway and commenced to bring me one of the fruits.
It was a soft, yellow orb somewhat resembling a palm-fruit. However, when I cut into it to see if there was pit, I found two large seeds instead. This inspired me to look it up on Google – “tropical fruit with two seeds” – and the top result was actually the answer. Padre had found a Loquat Tree: a plant native to the temperate regions of Asia and grown in the United States both for its fragrant flowers and its delicious fruit.
After reading that second portion, I’d say it took about ten seconds before I decided to sample the exotic morsel. And it was delicious. The Loquat’s texture was akin to that of a prime nectarine while its flavor was closer to that of a starfruit. It was probably one of the tastiest ‘wild finds’ since lambs quarter.
Final Note: Tomorrow there shall be more flooring activity. We already have the piece of plywood cut for the bedroom, so I’ll start off by fastening that down, and then I’ll begin the process of finishing up the hallway and the small section in front of the closet-wall**.
*A leafy green reminiscent of spinach.
**I also intend to gather some Loquat seeds and plant them in planters. From the best sproutlings, I’ll choose two or three and plant them somewhere on the farm… perhaps near Jacobhouse (not close, though, because they grow quite large and very rapidly).
