Green tape indicating location of impending appliances in Jacob's container home.

Electrical Planning, Day 1

2/14/2019:

Building Summary: Today was a planning day. It consisted of figuring out (at least partly) what I was going to do in regard to the wardrobe, marking out some light fixture and outlet locations, and also defining the locations of appliances in the kitchen. During the lattermost portion, I found that the refrigerator was going to be sitting on top of its cold water stub up, so I fixed the problem by removing an obtrusive 2×4 (the piece with a notch in it), and rerouting the stub up so it would emerge right along the kitchen’s east wall versus 2 inches out.

Commentary: As stated above, most of today was spent planning. I still have a couple brief highlights, though. The first occurred as I was measuring out strips of green tape for the kitchen. I was doing this so I could know the exact places for Jacobhouse’s various appliances and see where to place all the potential outlets. While doing this, I got the same feeling one gets when re-reading a suspenseful book: a sensation of wondering if everything would fit together even though I already knew it would. And indeed, in the end, the tape did indicate that the washer/dryer, sink, stove, and refrigerator would all fit*. Of course, I’m sure I’ll experience this sort of anticipation once more when we actually move the appliances in.

The second highlight is an idea that Padre gave me when I told him there would be a dire lack of counter space between the dual-basin sink and stove. He told me that in a lot of small houses, people put a snug-fitting cutting board in the basin that is least-used during cooking. So, between that, the space to the left of the sink, and the large space on the counter belonging to the opposite wall, I should have more than enough room to perform some cooking shenanigans in Jacobhouse.

As for what I’m going to do tomorrow… I should state that I’m not even done for today. Presently, after I submit this post, I will be measuring the ‘depth’ of my present bed so I know the dimensions to make the mattress frame in Jacobhouse, and I will be researching various ‘chests of drawers’ that I might be able to build and place beneath that mattress frame.

New route for refrigerator stub up in Jacob's container home.

*Not strictly true. The refrigerator stub-up was in the way of where the appliance was going to sit. So, to finish up the morning, I cut a few pieces of CPVC and used a couple elbows to reroute the stub up so it emerged right next to the kitchen’s eastern wall. This will allow for the refrigerator to fit AND it will provide additional space that I didn’t even think I would have access to before.
