The closed-in closet wall within Jacob's container home.

Closing in Wall #5 (and a return to the list).

6/28/19

(Above: The closed-in closet wall with half of its shelves in place. I cut the other half slightly too wide, so they are currently leaning on the lowest shelf.)

Building Summary: As per yesterday’s final note, I started off today by measuring and cutting the long pieces of plywood that line the closet-wall’s north sides (east and west). This was followed by Padre helping me fasten up the large pieces of plywood I cut yesterday – a process that went quite easily on account of the sheets fitting exactly how they were supposed to.

After that, I continued with my work on the shelving area of Wall #5. This included fastening on those aforementioned ‘long pieces’ and then by my measuring / cutting four shelves from a couple small sheets of scrap plywood.

Commentary: Jacobhouse leaped a step forward today. With Wall #5 now closed in, the container home has officially been split into four separate rooms: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and office. Seeing as the wall is almost completely finished (more in final note), and seeing as I’m about halfway between the June 9th free weekend and my departure for a 1-week Colorado trip,  I believe it’s time to revisit the list I made. All of the crossed-off sections are bits that have been accomplished* in the past 19 days.

  1. Wall #6
    • Trim outside with PVC trim / caulk
    • Sprayfoam cracks on inside.
    • Plywood inside.
  2. Intall shower drain (already have).
    • Doesn’t have to be done at this step, just needs to be done before flooring begins.
  3. Closet-wall (First priority because I need to do this so I can put up the (steel) paneling and then the fixtures.)
    • Build the pull out wardrobe
      • Already have drawer slides, need lumber / hanger rack / plan to create the actual pull-out
    • Shelves should also be made for the back section, because it will be much easier to work in that space without the plywood in place.
  4. Finish up the front
    • Complete the soffit
    • Cover and trim around the entire door and window area.
  5. Panel the walls after all plywood is up
    • Procure from Home Depot
    • Install.
  6. Hook up all fixtures after paneling is up.
  7. Hook up panel box to pole outside. (Halfway done).
    • Need Alan for this one.
  8. Build front step (kitchen)
  9. Flooring
    • Procure from Home Depot.
    • Install.
  10. Vanity sink (after flooring, so I will not have to cut special pieces for it)
    • Cut hole into Vanity for waterlines / drain
    • Position it and fasten it into place.
  11. Toilet (after flooring, so no special cutting required except for drain hole).
    • Simply need to hook it up to waterline and sewer line.
  12. Finish Bathroom Closet
    • Create cover for bottom
    • Make shelves
    • Add / finish door.
      • Perhaps ¾” plywood with differently painted metal sheeting (same as walls) as a front.
  13. Pocket Door
    • Paint and install
    • Once this and all the bathroom fixtures are in, the bathroom will be complete
  14. Kitchen Counters (both sides)
    • Structural supports (procure wood for this and the closet-wall at the same time?
      • Possible drawer on far left side – already have slides.
    • Finding and ordering the actual counter material
      •   Will require measurements (already have).
  15. Hook up sink after counter is in place
    • Have sink, need faucet / drain.
  16. Bed
    • Cow-wood finished and placed (along with some plywood) to make a suitable frame for mattress.
    • Shelving / bin holders built into base.
      • Will likely require some additional lumber, but may be able to use all from farm for this.
  17. Fix
    • Straighten stairs leading up to porch
    • Add railing
    • Log chains switched with small chains presently outside
  18. Furnish
    • Grill for front deck
    • Mattress from oldhouse
    • Desk
      • Possibly use one from office near old-house.
      • Same goes for chair from office near old-house.
    • Tenant
      • Jacob.

Well, it’s a lot off the list, but there’s still much to be done. Fortunately I still have over half a month before I depart for Colorado. It would be really nice if I could manage to finish the electrical plugin (from Jacobhouse to power pole), install the paneling, and lay down the flooring** in that time.

Beef and scallop dinner that Jacob made after working on Jacobhouse.
Bonus Image: Beef and Scallops.
Today’s lunch consisted of a Master Blend burger steak, pan-seared scallops, and a braised romaine salad. The salad was dressed with home-made Caesar while the beef and scallops were dressed with a Merlot and Devonshire cream deglaze. It was indeed as amazing as it sounds.

Final Note: Tomorrow I will start by trimming down the width of the two final shelves I made today, and then I will go about finishing the plywood exterior of Wall #5 (needs a narrow strip along the very top, and some directly below and above the shelving on the 2×4 brace boards). After this, it may be time to start planning for the wall paneling.

*Or virtually so.

** Maybe stretching it.
