(Above: Yet another cowmooflaged Wagyu calf.)
Active Summary: This morning’s early morning regimen consisted of writing, calisthenics, and a beef pasture check with Padre. On returning from the pasture, we worked some cattle around for about 30 minutes, and then I made my way back home. There, I wrote for a while longer, cooked up a big ole pot of tomato stew for lunch (consisted of chopping & sauteing mushroms / onions / garlic / brussels sprouts, adding a number of Italian herbs & spices, and tossing in a Parmesan rind for extra flavor). As the stew simmered, I chopped up a watermelon, and I ventured outdoors to search for a missing Wagyu calf. The search ended up taking about 45 minutes, but I did eventually find the diminutive bovine and carry it back to its mother. Morning activities concluded with a tasty albeit light lunch of tomato-and-vegetable stew.
(5:08 PM Update:) Afternoon activities began with more writing, a brief rest, and then by my venturing outdoors to help with cattle-related activities. The latter bit consisted of: feeding, catching bovines for embryo transfers, checking calves for ailments, collecting blood from a couple calves for genetic testing, and riding around the beef pasture – again checking calves for ailments but also searching for the same calf that I had to find this morning. I almost fell off the Segway once due to running over an especially large manure pile*, but other than that the ride was uneventful. Padre and I took a brief seltzer break, and now I am back at Jacobhouse writing and putting together the majority of this day’s entry before our evening pasture patrol and evening dinner at La Cuisine of Ocala.
Final Note: Here are few of the pictures I took of this evening’s meal; it was tremendous!
*This becomes more of a problem in dry weather. The cow pats – sometimes quite sizeable – harden beneath the sun and become just as hazardous as coconuts when it comes to riding a segway. The thing about cow pats, though, is that there are a lot more of them than coconuts!
