The leveled and fastened soffit above the kitchen in Jacob's container home.

Fastening the soffit (and a change of plans).

4/29/19

Building Summary: Today I fastened in the soffit, straightening it with clamps and a level as I went. Also, there were multiple plans made today in regard to the decorative panels that will end up covering the vent-space, but those will be revealed in the commentary.

Commentary: I got a decent bit accomplished at Jacobhouse today despite certain, less-than-ideal circumstances on the family farm that needed tending. The soffit is now fastened very sturdily in place with self-tapping screws at the top and washer-clad woodscrews on the bottom. I tested this sturdiness by performing a classic ‘grab & joggle’ which resulted only a bit of self-joggling.

As for highlights, I’d have to say that the most noteworthy were the two different plans for the kitchen’s soffit covering. Padre provided an excellent idea at the beginning of this morning in regard to using the old refrigeration ‘flaps’ (pictured below) for a covering. They already possessed pre-drilled holes for screws, and the hinges on them would allow me access to the soffit any time I desired.

Refrigeration 'flappers' originally found to either side of the container's fridge unit.

However, a new plan (and a second highlight) occurred this afternoon when Charlie the welder-man dropped by the pieces of 1/16” metal that were mentioned in yesterday’s post. At first sight of that metal, I knew that it would be the material to use, for it was aluminum, and highly-polished aluminum at that – a color that matched the stainless steel interior of Jacobhouse with utmost precision. And on another note of precision, Charlie was quite exact with his measurements, and the pieces he gave me added up to be exactly 133″ long while the height is 10-¼”. A perfect (sof)fit.*

In regard to Padre’s aluminum doors, there is much house left to build, so I’m certain that there will be a use for them somewhere… perhaps over the panel box frame?

Final Note: Tomorrow, I plan on running the vent lines through the soffit and perhaps feeding the cord to the outlet box that will be placed up there for the microwave / ovenhood.

*Sorry, that’s the second day in a row. I’ll try to behave tomorrow.
