(Above: I took a picture of these sunflowers a few days ago when I already thought there was a ridiculous number of them. Today, however, that number seemed to somehow have increased. I think the recent rains are the cause.)
Active Summary: This day began with almost an hour of writing, a beef pasture check with Padre, and then a return to Jacobhouse where I performed calisthenic exercises. Shortly after that, I visited Garden #1 for a brief time where I collected some Sandwich Isle Salsify before venturing down to the Harbison farm market and presenting the odd looking roots to the folks there as a gift. They were quite perplexed at the name of the plant but were thrilled at the fact of its European / African origins and seemed to look forward to cooking it later on in the day.
On returning home, I put all the fruits and vegetables away, cut up a watermelon, and prepared pork-chops for reverse searing after lunch. This was followed by a visit to a studio and then by the aforementioned lunch preparation: reverse searing the pork-chops whilst tending to Master Blend correspondence and sauteing halved mushrooms in pork fat and butter.
(7:27 PM Update:) Afternoon activities began with more Master Blend correspondence, a brief rest, and some writing. Cattle-related activities came after this and included: feeding bovines, catching / treating a couple calves with pinkeye, checking the beef pasture for ailing animals, and aiding Padre and Wag in the extraction of a backwards-position Belgian Blue calf from its mother who was having very-obvious difficulties calving. Other activities I tended to included Refill #4 on the seltzerator and removing 5 hornworms from the tomato plants just outside of Jacobhouse*.
Final Note: After finishing this post, I will be eating a dinner of sweet potato and watermelon over at Padre’s studio. In regard to tomorrow’s activities, new beef will be arriving to the Master Blend freezer room in the morning, so there will likely be much sorting and inventory tracking. I also think that there will be 1-2 customers arriving in the morning and possibly more in the afternoon.
*I also removed three hornworm eggs. They look akin to minuscule pearls about 1-2 milimeters in diameter.
