Too many wireworms! (And moving forward.)

2/17/2020

(Above: Arugula flowers I harvested this morning. They will likely be used in bread.)

Active Summary: After this morning’s early regimen, I returned to Jacobhouse where I wrote, worked on school for about an hour, and tended to Master Blend email before heading out to work on the High-Garden. There, after digging up a good fifteen or so wireworms, I determined that it probably was not the most ideal location for a garden (more in commentary).

I next returned to Jacobhouse, showered, and then tended to a Master Blend customer before venturing into town with Madre to procure some groceries and a delicious lunch from Sushi Bistro. Lunch was followed by a return to Jacobhouse where I rested and tended to Master Blend inventory / emails before going out to tend to afternoon activities.

Afternoon activities included: a few cattle-related tasks of feeding / vaccination, helping Padre install the front deck to his studio, determining if I could get lights to work in the old milk room*, and harvesting vegetation for my dinner salad. Now I’m writing this entry before going up to Oldhouse to cook some eggs to toss on that salad… and to make some coconut mousse for dessert.

(9:56 PM Update:) I discovered that the coconut cream we purchased earlier was filled with sugar! Alas, this meant my throwing out a big ole batch of mousse, but I also ordered some unsweetened coconut cream online, and it will be here Wednesday. Round 2 will prove much more fruitful.

TIL: Quite a hefty amount of learning took place today. On finding those myriad wireworms in High-garden, I researched and found that they eat pretty much any root, including tomato roots and fruits. I also learned about various GDP formulae in Macroeconomics, the simplest being [GDP = consumption + investment + government expenditure + (exports – imports)]. But the most interesting fact I learned today is that the old stainless steel washbasin in the milk-room is easily removable and that it will make an exceptional garden-side sink.

Commentary: There really were an incredible number of wireworms at the High-garden today in all different stages of development. I think they were feasting on the roots of the prevalent paper-mulberry saplings. It is also probably why those sprouts all possessed yellowed leaves and a rather withered-looking appearances. Though I was disappointed by the fact of High-Garden not working out, Padre and I have since selected a better location where I will eventually place and plant some raised beds.

Final Note: While I figure out the logistics of a raised garden, I’m going to work on wiring a functional light within the old milk-room / neatening it up for storage.

*The intention is to use the milk room as a storage space so I can clear out the remainder of non-Master Blend paraphernalia from the freezer room.
