Active Summary: This morning began with my rising from the bed in Jacobhouse, starting the clothes wash*, and performing my daily calisthenic exercises. This was followed by some creative writing and then by my venturing out onto the farm. It was rather moist out there on account of a passing tropical storm, so Padre and I walked instead of rode Segways for the beef pasture checkup.
The second half of the morning was devoted to more writing, neatening up Jacobhouse, adding the mattress topper to my bed**, and then venturing down to the Harbison farmers’ market where I procured the weekly vegetation.
(7:01 PM Update:) I returned home after a lunch with Padre, Madre, and my brother at Oldhouse. There, I proceeded to make bread dough. I learned that the stainless steel workbench makes for an excellent surface, but it needs to be lowered slightly for maximum leverage whilst kneading dough. Other afternoon activities included some cattle feeding, waiting for the rain, and after finishing this container blog, heading up to Oldhouse and cooking my brother an excellent birthday dinner of Picanha, home-bread, and grilled creamer potatoes.
TIL: Today I learned how to bake bread in a Dutch oven. It is extremely simple – much moreso than baking bread as I usually do. When I ordinarily cook a loaf, I preheat the oven, procure a pot of boiling water, and then pour that water into a roasting pan to provide a steam bath for the bread. With a Dutch oven, I simply dump/roll the dough into the preheated pot, place the lid over the top, and bake it for 45 minutes at 450 degrees F. It does take slightly longer to cook, but the ease and the result are well worth the extra few minutes.
Commentary: What with the light yet constant rain, the overcast skies, and my spending much of the day in or near Jacobhouse, I’ve had quite a relaxing Saturday. In addition to this, there is the fact that I no longer need to work on the container home every hour of every morning. This has opened up quite a vast time slot that, if I’m being honest, I do not know how to utilize. There are some ideas that are percolating, though… I can’t help but think of how Thoreau dabbled in gardening and crop-growing, and I wonder if I would succeed at doing the same. Of course, that will require a small fence to keep out curious bovines, but a fence is a simple thing to construct after having built an entire house.
Final Note: Tomorrow, depending on what the weather is doing and what sort of farm shenanigans are occurring, I may very well initiate some form of new activity. Whether it will be setting up a garden fence, writing, procuring / cutting boards for the front deck, or cleaning / clearing out the Master Blend freezer room, I cannot say… What I do know is that no matter what I end up participating in, I will be enjoying my newfound freedom.
*Last night I discovered that the washer/dryer is not to be ran during sleeping hours. The reason for this is not the volume; it is a surprisingly quiet device. No, it is the sounds’ unpredictability that continuously started me back to full wakefulness.
** I slept last night without the memory-foam mattress topper because I was uncertain if I actually needed it. I have found that I do not need it, but I do want it. And so, the tall bed grows taller…
