8/2/19:
(Above: Bathroom closet with shelves in place. The trim is not yet fastened because I was testing its appearance. To me, it looks like the aluminum angle stock will work quite nicely.)
Building Summary: This morning’s activities consisted of repainting the bedroom / bathroom shelves and digging the fourth hole (Hole #12) for Padre’s Studio. After these two tasks were complete, I returned to Jacobhouse, placed the shelves into their respective locations, cut a couple pieces of aluminum angle stock for the bathroom ledges, and then cleared out the bedroom area in preparation for tomorrow’s activities.
Commentary: Today, as I was riding around the beefers with Padre during a mid-morning intermission, I was troubled by the fact that, now that I was done with the latest painting shenanigan, I had no idea what I was going to work on next. There is still much to do, of course, but the order was giving me trouble. And so, I mulled it over – partly within my head and partly with Padre.
The original intent was to get the walls paneled and trimmed, move on to the floor, and from there move on to the toilet / sink / bed. However, there was the problem that I don’t exactly know what I’m going to trim the walls’ bases with yet, and the other fact is that it is a little bit imprudent to install the flooring before I’ve finished with all the plumbing / indoor construction. As stated in the prior paragraph, there is still much to be done, and during all that ‘doing’, I’d likely be giving my floor a hefty bit of wear.
So, what was my decision? I decided to proceed in an order that is almost opposite that of the original intent. I’m going to begin work on the bed first, because after that is complete, there will be no more need for lumber in Jacobhouse. Next, I will install the toilet / sink*, and after that, I will probably be working on framing / pouring the concrete kitchen counter(s) and building the front step**. The final two steps will be to finish trimming/molding the walls and laying down the floor. For easy reference, I’m going to make this past paragraph into a list:
- Build bed frame / simple storage area.
- Paint and trim the toilet / sink pedestals.
- Install toilet and vanity sink.
- Frame kitchen counter spaces.
- Can construct the front step at this time, as well.
- Pour and install counters.
- Fill in the gaps.
- Install all remaining moldings / trim.
- Close in area above stove.
- Decide what is needed to finish up around front entry (and do it).
- Paint and install pocket door.
- Install cupboard doors to bathroom and office.
- Simple ¾” plywood slabs hinged, painted, and trimmed will likely work here – possibly attach mirror to bathroom cupboard door.
- Install sliding barn door in front of spice cupboard
- Floor. ***
Final Note: Tomorrow I plan on going to the farmer’s market and making some quail and mushroom stew for lunch. This will only take part of the morning; the other portion shall be spent planning for the bed in Jacobhouse****.
*Decided that instead of adding linoleum tiles beneath those two furnishings, I will paint the pedestal spaces turquoise and then trim them with aluminum angle stock. This was determined after seeing how nicely the trimmed shelves in the bathroom closet turned out.
**The step down from the front door – likely a hinged box that will have shoe storage.
*** Technically, this can be done right after 6a… I just want to be done with the majority of the metal work before I lay down the floor. This will reduce the chance of accidental scratches, and more importantly, the presence of small metal shards that may remain around long enough to find a home in my bare feet. I will never forget the nibbler slivers.
****Part of that planning will occur today when I take measurements of my bed and mattress in old-house.
