(Above: Sunrise. )
Weather: Today began in the 50s, very windy, slightly rainy. After the storm cleared, it was sunny and still, rising into the 80s. Later in the day, clouds returned but not the rain.
Morning cleanup & writing: I have not been having much for breakfast other than a piece of fruit or some nuts. This is because I’m returning to the intermittent-fasting schedule. My body appreciates the time to digest and reset its system, and I appreciate being hungry at least once a day. Hunger does not seem to be possible when I eat 3 meals a day.
Pre-dawn; On rising this morning, I found an odd orange-yellow glow shining in the bathroom window. I decided to venture outdoors before calisthenics, and this is what I found. I also found the slight chaos that last night’s gale wrought on Casa Spratling’s lowest terrace. Sunrise. [4/22/2022] Dawn of 4/22/2022, facing Casa Spratling. There were a lot of leaves to sweep up this morning, but the big ole ficus appears unmoved and unchanged. The remnants of last night’s leaf-vortex (see final note of prior post). Another of the morning’s tasks consisted of washing and hanging up clothes. This is likely the last time I’ll do it until I’m back at Jacobhouse. By noon, I had neatened up the lowest terrace back to its original state.
Lunch from Taco Roy’s – Excellent flavor, price, and swift service – 10/10
Taco Roy’s – a literal hole-in-the-wall – restaurant. Despite its diminutive size, it was thronged with people when I arrived. I believe there was even a foreman ordering food for his work crew. He had a construction hat on, and the bag of food he left with was large enough to feed upwards of ten people. The full spread: Salsa verde (con chicharrón), pickled onions, Diet Coke (off to the left somewhere), and 4 tacos. These tacos were: pimiento relleno de queso (cheese-stuffed pepper), chuleta (lightly breaded thin cut pork chop), pierna de puerco (pulled pork leg), and pollo (chicken). A close-up of the chile relleno taco. It was literally a breaded & fried pepper stuffed with cheese and wrapped in two tortilla shells. I topped this with the aforementioned onions and salsa verde. It was excellent, as were all the ensuing tacos. The cost for this meal was 140 pesos (includes tip).
The afternoon stroll:
View of Cristo from the “Fountain Square” in Taxco. A view from the Church of Guadalupe at about 6:15 PM. I am, no doubt, looking forward to home. However, one of my favorite things about Taxco (and México in general) is that this seems to be about the time of day when people gather and just ‘hang out’, talking while enjoying the scene surrounding them rather than immersing themselves in distraction. I enjoy the fact that this is a ‘norm’ here rather than a rarity.
Dinner at Del Angel Inn – Good guacamole & soup, terrific salad, and decent service – 9/10
Entrance to Del Angel Inn Restaurante. View of the Santa Prisca from my table at Del Angel Inn. I think a majority of these restaurants are designed for 2+ people. That’s probably why they gave me chips & bread to start rather than just one or the other. This is not a complaint, only an observation… and in this case a welcome observation because I was ravenous. Chips and salsa served alongside the bread and butter. They were delectable, but my favorite combination was adding some of the spicy chili oil to the butter and using that on the previously shown bread. Del Angel Inn guacamole. It had fine salt content (sometimes gaucamole is lacking in this category), but it could have used more spiciness. I did appreciate the lettuce served with it, though, and I learned that gaucamole & lettuce wraps are surprisingly tasty and something I could see myself doing at home. Sopa Tortilla: Similar to the tortilla soup at La Hacienda restaurant. However, instead of having a chunky tomato broth, this one was smooth – almost pureed. Even though it was enjoyable, I would have preferred a tad more texture and flavor. La ensalada griega: This Greek salad is one of the best restaurant salads I’ve had in Taxco during this trip. It bore a variety of produce, including: lettuce, onion, tomato, bell pepper (red), olives, cucumber, and feta. As for the the dressing, it was vinegary just how I like it.
Final Note: It is presently 10:50 AM on 4/23/2022. I have written, swept, and completed ‘container log’ for the day. I think I’m going to do a tad more writing and then go for a walk to lunch: a chilaquileria named De Totopo y Salsa.
Over three weeks and the views still inspire. Thanks for sharing.
