(Above: Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel. I believe this is the 8th standalone church I’ve found in Taxco. I say standalone, because there are a number of tiny churches and chapels built into other larger buildings.)
Weather: Today began in the mid-50s and warmed into the 80s. Threatened rain late day, but only resulted in high winds.
Catching up on some calories (there was some bowel distress the prior evening that has since resolved):
Morning of 4/18/2022: After last night’s clean-out, I felt the need for calories. So, I procured this corn muffin from a street vendor on my way back from acquiring the morningly soda. Despite being wrought of corn and having a similar taste to corn-bread, it’s crumb was more open, flavorful, and moist. For ‘second breakfast’ I decided on bread instead of fruit. It was accompanied by two types of freshly wrought marinade. The golden sort was mango & basil; the purple was cranberry & rosemary. I thoroughly enjoyed both.
Lunch at Cocina Economica (first one on right when entering ‘La Fonda’ section of the Mercado) – 8/10
The menu. I decided on the enchiladas suizas (cheese filled enchiladas) drenched in salsa verde and topped with lettuce, tomato, and Queso cotija. It was fairly light and felt good for the belly. These enchiladas, a bottle of water, and tip cost me only 80 pesos.
The afternoon walk & accordion practice:
Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel. The shade cloth in front of this church was very reminiscent of that which we use for bovines on the farm. View of Taxco (and Cristo) from the church of San Miguel. The residential (non-tourist) side of Taxco. A small demonstration on the square in an effort to get electricity to all residents in the Taxco area (there are still a number of residents on the fringes of this city who have no running water or electricity). Taxco at 6:45 PM. [4/18/2022] View from the lowest terrace of Casa Spratling while practicing the accordion.
La Terraza Café and Bar – Excellent victuals, phenomenal view, and great company – 10/10
Before I even began to eat, I noted the impending precipitation. I decided to stay on the terrace as long as possible, though, due to the tremendous vista and because the breeze was comfortably cool and humid. The fine view from La Terraza Restaurant of Taxco. I saw people – possibly tourists – walking around on the top of Santa Prisca, and I could not help but wonder how they got there. Roasted pumpkin seeds coated with chili powder, salt, and possibly other spices. Crispy and crunchy. On viewing the menu, I decided to try out the beverage at the bottom of the list. It was a colorful ‘bebida’ and made for an excellent picture. As for flavor, the gin tasted of refreshing pine needles and was well-accompanied by the sweetness of apple and strawberry. Well-presented guacamole topped with a “tomato-rose” and basil leaf. The full spread of appetizer & beverage. The guacamole was really good, but it could have utilized some additional lime juice for kick. I was supposed to have a picture of a pizza here (Pizza Veggie), but there was an interesting turn of events when it began to rain. On venturing indoors, there were not enough tables to accommodate the people who had been on the balcony. So, I was invited by a nice couple from Mexico City (Rodrigo & Daniella) to sit with them. They proceeded to share some of their food: a bread ‘shrimp popper in tamarind sauce’ and a potato wedge coated in delectable creamy cheese. I attempted to share my Veggie pizza with them, but they were full. The conversation we had consisted of a few interesting topics. Rodrigo had been to Florida and told me about a Dahli Museum in St. Pete that I didn’t even know about. Daniella was from a town in northern Mexico named Chihuahua – a pretty place, especially when compared to the picture that US news paints of the towns along the border.
| As for the picture, I believe this was a mistaken button press while I was moving my belongings and food from the outdoor table to the indoor table.
Final Note: As I write this, it is already 7:01 PM on the following day. The days here, despite seeming long at times, slip by with startling rapidity.
Quite the day, great pictures once again and it’s interesting how I begin your blog fully satiated but somehow end up a little bit hungry.
