Weather: Today began in the low 50s and proceeded to warm into mid 80s. Sunny and dry throughout.
The Morning Walk & Sweep:
Rosemary at dawn from the central terrace of Casa Spratling [4/16/2022]. Sunrise [4/16/2022], Taxco. A view I appreciated on the way to the bank this morning (simply to see if it was open on weekends; it was not). An interesting acquisition in addition to my morning beverage. Sucralose for a sweetener. When I had the bar as a dessert late in the evening, it tasted like semi-sweet chocolate without the sour aftertaste (an aftertaste caused by leftover sugar on the tongue).
Breakfast at Scaffecito – About halfway through Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury – 10/10
A breakfast of: coffee, fruit (papaya, pineapple, and cantaloupe topped with heirba buena), seltzer, and reading.
Lunch at El Cabrito – Excellent portions, price, and above all, flavor – 11/10
El Cabrito, Barbacoa y Consomé de Chivo. Excellent food, and probably the first time I’ve gotten a home-like portion of meat since coming to México on this trip. I was craving beef or chicken or MEAT. Chivo (goat) – somewhat akin to beef – satiated the craving. The mere scent of the food on this plate was phenomenal. Accompanied solely by vinegary jalapeños and tortillas, it made for a memorable meal. I actually ended up asking for a second ‘la mitad plata’ (half-plate). Last one… for now. After I was done eating my second plate of Chivo, the serving lady (quite possibly Miguel’s mother), gave me this business card. Postern side of the business card.
The Afternoon Walk:
A couple dogs belonging to the new neighbors in the apartment next door. The right dog is almost the size of a weanling calf and is not keen on fireworks. Bringing such a creature to Taxco during Holy Week was probably not the best decision. Templo de la Santisima Trinidad. A church very near to where Padre and I had our dental cleaning during our prior visit to this city. Angle from the other side. Afternoon of Easter Eve 2022 in Taxco. Descending a little alley toward Highway 95 (main road running through Taxco). Looking back at Taxco while walking Highway 95 which leads past Loma Linda Hotel. A side-by-side restaurant: One a Mexican Buffet and the other a Domino’s Pizza. I have found two Domino’s in Taxco thus far. Another potential restaurant to try. The wilderness that lays just outside of Taxco. It will probably be less desert-like after the rainy season begins in May. Comida China, found on the road directly before Elektra. The fan I acquired at Chedraui functions well, but I probably would have done better to go to Elektra. They have a larger variety of appliances – some of which are much cheaper. Cost of an ATV in the Elektra store of Taxco. I should note that Taxco’s Elektra store also has a Banco Azteca inside where one can change large bills into small bills. Helpful for the weekends when the main bank near the Zócalo is closed. I finally discovered what these coils are. They are water heaters that can heat a 5 gallon bucket of water in 20 minutes. A 5-gallon bucket of exterior white paint / primer with 2-year guarantee costs 590 pesos. That is ~$30.00. Acquisitions from the Super Chedraui: Popular seeds for the clime (ranging from 13-25 pesos a pack), artificial vanilla (~16 pesos), and authentic Mexican Vanilla (~140 pesos). Mexico used to be rife with artificial vanilla made from a different type of bean – Tonka beans – containing Coumarin (a blood thinner that has been banned in the US since 1954). Coumarin regulation has recently increased drastically in México, so this bottle is labeled with a guarantee that it does not contain Coumarin. Barbería Antonios with Antonio himself cleaning up after my visit. It was a quick cut, well done, and only cost 100 pesos.
Dinner at Scaffecito – Huazontle Lasagna, bread, and a glass of Wine. An excellent end to Day 19 – 10/10
A hefty portion of hand-made lasagna filled with spinach, huazontle – a plant kin to lamb’s quarter, and broccoli. Accompanied by bread and a glass of wine.
Final Note: The weather here in Taxco is excellent everyday, but it is getting a little bit warmer. It will be interesting to swim in the Posas Azules next week after the Easter crowds have departed.
Feel like I’m getting to know Taxco more with each post, makes me want to visit again. Thanks again for sharing.
